NEW DELHI: Punjab, Haryana and Delhi governments and the Centre on Wednesday decided to build an expressway on new alignment linking the national Capital with Ludhiana, which would also have a separate node to connect Chandigarh. The expressway is likely to cost Rs 20,000 crore, and would reduce distance between Delhi and Ludhiana by 50 km.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by highways minister C P Joshi and attended by Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Punjab deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and Delhi PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan. The six-lane expressway would branch out from outer Delhi, and the 266-km stretch would pass through Sonipat, Safidon, Asandh, Kaithal districts in Haryana and Samana and Nabha districts in Punjab.
"There will be a node from this expressway to provide connectivity to Chandigarh. Both Haryana and Punjab have consented to provide all help for execution of this project. Earlier two Central ministers from Punjab (Manish Tiwari and Ashwani Kumar) had also mooted the expressway plan," Joshi said. The Chandigarh node would be of 91 km.
Badal and Hooda said that a decision has been taken to start the process of fixing alignment of the expressway, and also to carry out feasibility study. "The financing models would be decided after mutual consultation," they told reporters.
All the three stake-holder states would appoint their PWD secretaries as nodal heads. "To make the project financially viable allowing township development and giving them exclusive connectivity to the expressway would be an option," Joshi said.
Punjab has already consented to the linking of townships to the expressway. Joshi added that the Cabinet had earlier approved building an expressway from Delhi to Chandigarh, but due to demands from states, now it has been decided to re-align the project from Delhi to Ludhiana with a link to Chandigarh.
